Dodging an Attack

Dodging an attack is when you move your troops out of your targeted city so that they are not harmed when the attack hits. You can enlist your militia prior to dodging so they will kill attacking troops if any. (To do this Click on your farm in city overview, and then click the enlist button.) You should also minimize the number of resources in your warehouse so that the attacker goes home with as little loot as possible. Dodging is a fundamental tactic that everyone should understand. When you are faced with a series of attacks, it is generally a good idea to dodge, because:

1) You spare your troops so you'll have more available to defeat any subsequent colony ship attack

2) If you dodge effectively, the attacker gains few, if any battle points. If you intend to dodge, be sure to make this clear if you report the incoming attack in the support forum. It is neither fair nor sensible to have your allies sacrificing their troops supporting you when yours are safely dodging the attack!

Methods

There are a number of ways you can dodge. All involve sending your troops and ships out of harm’s way. You can send them to support another friendly city. You can send them on a farming mission. You can also send them somewhere less than ten minutes before the attack hits and then cancel the sending just after the attack has hit. Be sure to cancel within ten minutes of sending, because, after ten minutes, you lose the option of canceling.

Timing

Colony ship attacks are often preceded by a number of clearing attacks. The clearing attacks aim to reduce your defenses to a minimum so that there is maximum chance that the colony ship attack will succeed in starting a siege. With this scenario, you may want to dodge all but the colony ship attack. However, sometimes the attacker will plan his attacks so that there is only a minimal interval between the final clearing attack and the colony ship attack. This interval can sometimes (deliberately) be only a few seconds in duration.

You have sent your army to attack/defense trip. By launching it anti-timer will hassle the time (read here). You have to be aware that when you cancel your trip, anti-timer does not affect. So basically you can cancel your trip exactly. This is called sniping.

Remember your militia!

When you send your troops away to dodge an attack, you can enlist your militia in your city so that there are forces left to kill invading troops. One of the commonest newbie mistakes is to neglect to do this! The great thing about militia is that even if they are wiped out, they can be instantly replaced, three hours after they were enlisted, and it doesn't cost any resources to do so! To enlist your militia, click on your farm in city overview, and then click the enlist button. You get 10 militia units per farm level, or 15 per farm level when you have 'City Guard' researched (and it is a MUST to research). A good idea would also be to enlist your militia at certain times like once just over 3 hours before a CS attack to then enlist them again to hopefully help your sniping units snipe the CS (read how to snipe here).

Minimizing resources left in your warehouse

If you dodge an attack that contains troops, you will probably want to minimize the resources in your warehouse prior to the attack, so that your attacker goes home with as little loot as possible. If you have Market, you can send resources to other players. Your market will need to be at least level 10 to send resources overseas. Other ways to minimize resources are:

(1) Spend them on buildings

(2) Spend them on troops (make sure the troops are not completed before the attack arrives if attacking troops are expected!

(3) Deposit silver in your cave to increase your resistance to spying

(4) Offer resources on the market. (Use an extortionate exchange rate if you don't want someone to actually take up the offer!)

(5) Use them to upgrade your farms.

Some concerns:

In case you have high wall/tower, it might be a good idea to block a Revolt attack. Stack your city with troops, the more you have, the less you will lose. It is better to have troops without a wall, than wall without troops. Save your Biremes till CS, dodge other attacks. In case it is your defensive city, snipe incoming CS with your troops (sending to support and canceling just on right time).

Dodging resources in the build queue, then canceling them will only lose 10% of their cost. Better than them taking them if you're saving up for something.
